Citibank Thank You Points has made yet another points transfer promotion available to their U.S. based members, offering a 25% bonus on transfers to Air France-KLM Flying Blue.
This promotion is showing on Citi card accounts with Thank You points earning capability, and the official expiration date (last transfer date) is June 17, 2023.
Transferring Thank You points (TYP) to Flying Blue is usually 1:1 in increments of 1000, and during the promotional period, members will benefit from the 1000:1250 ratio (25% bonus).
The transfer is typically instant so there’s no wait period in between which award availability could disappear.
You can access Citi Thank You and their transfer partners here.
There are several opportunities to use Flying Blue miles, including for the popular Promo Awards and especially transatlantic flights on Delta Airlines.
Those of us with U.S. based accounts are quite spoiled in that regard, as there are almost always ample opportunities to offload Thank You Points as well as Amex Membership Rewards Points at a good ratio.
Especially the redemptions through the popular Promo Awards is a sought after way to get the maximum value out of the points.
Here are the most recent Flying Blue Promo Awards that John covered:
The mileage amounts required to issue an award are MUCH smaller than compared to Delta Skymiles, for example, though the cash amount for surcharges is likely higher. It’s a tradeoff one has to take into account before transferring the miles.
I’d recommend only transferring points from programs such as Citi or Amex to other programs when you have a firm idea of what to use them for, ideally instantly. Moving them over “just in case” leaves the door open for devaluations of the program’s award structure and lack of award availability at a later time so I’d urge caution with that.
Conclusion
This could be a great opportunity for those with enough Citi points in their account to transfer them over to Flying Blue for bookings on Delta (much cheaper redemptions than via Delta SkyMiles) or KLM when they have their attractive Promo Awards available.
Unfortunately, the downside of the SkyTeam alliance is that they don’t really have many award-winning airlines in their collection. I’d say that China Airlines, Delta, KLM, and Korean Air are probably the best ones if you manage to find flights with their newest Business Class products. Virgin has joined recently as well, which could be good, although their own program is quite competitive and often has mileage transfer promotions as well.
