Reader’s Email To Us:

I am a Globalist member.

I took the opportunity of taking up a free night and booked free night.

I did not use free night and could not get there because I was ill.

I was then charged $1400+ for the free night because according to below if you don’t turn up you need to pay full price for something that is free.

This is complete madness.

And I also get points or recognition for it

Reader’s Email To Hotel:

There should not have any bill.  This was a free stay and I also did nay end up staying as I was ill.  I would appreciate refund to my American Express Card as soon as possible.

Hotel’s Response:

As per records we have you booked with us for arrival 06th May 2023 and came up as non-arrival.

We have no record of your booking is no longer required therefore the 1 night no show fee was charged.

Please note that when a booking is on free night stay or points when it becomes a no show the rate changes to Hyatt Daily Rate as part of the World of Hyatt Terms and Conditions.

I have spoken to our Front Desk Team to see if we can waive the charge, unfortunately I was not give the permission to do so.

I am sorry for not being able to accommodate you request on this occasion.

This situation is unfortunate, and the reader doesn’t have very good options.

If you have a Hyatt reservation that is NOT prepaid or has NOT been charged, you can easily modify the stay date a few months to the future without a fee and cancel later. However, the reader had an award reservation to a Hyatt hotel that they did not use or cancel.

The hotel gets award reimbursement only for a reservation where the guest checks in. If the hotel is sold out and the room is kept for late arrival, there is a loss to the hotel; they don’t get money from Hyatt for the stay and cannot resell it.

Relevant part World of Hyatt Terms and Conditions:

Award Reservations are subject to the cancellation policy of the applicable hotel or resort. These policies vary by hotel and resort and each hotel’s and resort’s cancellation policy can be found on the page for that hotel or resort within hyatt.com (or miraval.com, as applicable), by calling the hotel or resort directly, or by contacting a Hyatt Global Care Center. (Please see hyatt.com for contact information.) If a Member cancels an Award Reservation in compliance with the applicable hotel’s or resort’s cancellation policy, any corresponding points that have been deducted from the Member’s account (or the applicable award) will be returned to the account within approximately three (3) days of the cancellation. If a Member does not follow the proper cancellation policy for the applicable hotel or resort or if a Member does not check into the hotel or resort when scheduled, the credit card provided with the Award Reservation will be charged the Standard Rate then being offered by that hotel or resort on the date charged in accordance with the hotel’s or resort’s cancellation or no-show policy and any points/award redeemed for the applicable Award Reservation will be returned to the Member’s account, except that – if for any reason the credit card provided with the Award Reservation cannot be charged – Hyatt reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to (a) attempt to charge any other payment method we have on file for such Member and/or (b) retain (or deduct from the Member’s account) the points or award redeemed for the applicable Award Reservation.

We can argue whether charging the guest for the night’s price is fair, but I believe that it should be clearly disclosed during the award booking process.

I just had a look at the emails that I have received for Hyatt award reservations, and none disclose the exact amount:

So what is this one-night fee, and what is it based upon?

UPDATE: After we published this piece, we received an update from the reader that this issue has been resolved with the hotel.

Reader’s Additional Email To Hotel:

1. You are going to charge for something that is free.
2. I do not use the free offer that I have accumulated and then get charged for it.

3. The hotel has triple dipped in making a profit  firstly by being allocated the price of the room  and then by reselling the room and then charging me as well.
4. I then pay close to $1500 Australian for the pleasure of not staying in a hotel room which is supposed to be free.
5. I then receive your response noting that the free night cost me over 60 nights the year before in stays and that the charge was also not recognised as a stay nor points granted for it.
6. What should happen is that that you refund me money paid and I get allocate a new free night or points in lieu and be given an apology before I need to take further action not only legal but to publicise how I am being treated.

Hotel’s Response:

Greetings from Churchill.

Thank you for your email, and please accept my sincerest apologies for the inconvenience caused by the charges. I understand your frustration and would like to assure you that your loyalty to Hyatt and being a valued member of the Globalist are greatly appreciated.

I am happy to inform you that, as agreed, we have refunded the charges. I have also sent an email to World of Hyatt to ensure that the free night award is reinstated in your account, which you can redeem at any other Hyatt property or at our hotel.

In the future, please feel free to contact me directly for any assistance with your reservations. I will ensure that you have the most comfortable stay possible.

Thank you again for your loyalty to Hyatt, and I look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Conclusion

It is a very unfortunate situation that the reader has with Hyatt.

I would approach this from the angle that the exact no-show penalty was never disclosed during the booking process, and I have a tough time believing that a night at this specific Hyatt Regency would ever cost $1,400.

As the reader is a Globalist, they should contact their Hyatt Concierge and open a case.

There are always horror stories with award cancellation fees, but they are usually centered around a couple of Marriott properties that deal with them very aggressively, even in case of flight delays and cancellations.

Have you had any experiences with no-show Hyatt awards, and whether you were charged or not?

UPDATE: I am glad that the reader was able to resolve the issue with the hotel. But this case exposed the ambiguity of these no-show penalties when it comes to award nights. The exact amount is not disclosed anywhere.

Hyatt has hotels coming and going from this list when the opening dates change. So there is no need to register for this offer, and I am sure that some members are surprised when they earn bonus points for their stays at some of these new hotels.

Reader’s Email:

Wrote this about a recent stay at a Hyatt in DC I paid 393.63 for with taxes.TLDR? Bad. The manager offered me points and then ghosted me. So I called Globalist and they compensated me 15,000 points.

Also here’s the video of the sound the AC made. (And which the security guard had me replay for him)

https://youtube.com/shorts/qKnVNa17Oo4?feature=share

Reader’s Review:

I honestly thought when I was reading the reviews on this one that maybe this place just gets a larger than normal share of Karens. I’m a Hyatt globalist and stay 100 nights a year for work and it’s never THAT bad. I mean it’s a Hyatt Place so it has to have the basics right? Well it does have the basics, but apparently no one cares about them, from the manager to the night clerk.

Checked in and went up to my room and worked. When it was time to go to sleep at 11:30, I turned on the AC. I’ve stood next to electric leaf blowers that were quieter. Clearly a shot compressor. Which there’s no way that the last guest didn’t mention. And if they did, it clearly went to an indifferent repair staff because here I am dealing with it near midnight.

So I call down about it. No one picked up. Not in 10 minutes of calling. Eventually that means I have to go downstairs. I go down. The indifferent night clerk asks what the problem is. I play the video. It’s loud and weird enough – even on iphone speaker mode – to make the security guard say “what was THAT? Dude play that AGAIN.”

To the clerk? It meant nothing. Literally. No sorry this happened to you. No apologies that the engineer went home already. Just shrugged. Asked what I wanted to do. I said I can’t sleep like this and she sighed and gave me another room two floors down. Which meant I had to go back up, pack up and then move everything. So I did. And then brought the original keys back down. STILL nothing from her. But props to the security guard who saw me tired and angry and walking back to the elevator. HE came over and said, “Hey man, sorry you’re dealing with this. This can’t be easy.” Which was appreciated. It wasn’t. But a little kindness like that is kind of the least you can do about it. At least he got that even if she didn’t.

I went back up, plugged my phone into the nightstand clock and went to bed.

And I missed my wakeup alarm because the phone died. Why? The nightstand clock had no plug. The display worked and it showed the time because there was a battery in it. Which is a pretty dumb way to make a clock but an even dumber way to put one out for your guests.

I go down and tell the clerk this and also ask her to put a note in my room. As a globalist I get a 4PM checkout and because I didn’t sleep much the night before, I plan on coming back after my morning appointments to rest up before the flight. I also put a do not disturb sign on the door. She says she doesn’t need to put a note on room because it moves when I do and that my 4PM checkout and DND would be honored no matter what. I ask if she’s sure. She says absolutely.

I’m sure you know where this going.

I come back to my room to rest. I go in the bathroom and when I go to wash my hands the soaps are gone. Then I look out in the bed area and the sheets are all stripped and my stuff is moved around. And now I notice it, my do not disturb is nowhere to be found.

So that’s it. Now I go down and check out. The same clerk is on duty – the one who told me that there was no need for a note because housekeeping wouldn’t go in there. I list out everything and she cuts me off: “would you like to speak to the manager?” I say sure.

Then she goes to get him. And he comes back 15 minutes later. Which seems like a pretty long time when you’ve got a clearly angry guest up front. I tell him everything and I have to say, his face isn’t exactly saying “oh this is terrible, I’m going to make this right and take responsibility for making sure this doesn’t happen again.” And when I was finished, neither did his mouth. He said “I’m sorry you had this happen to you.”

I’m like “Seriously? No make good? No take responsibility? No at least I’ll throw you some points for your inconvenience?” He says “Sure, we can give you some points. I’ll do that today.” So I get my stuff, get an uber and go sleep it off at the airport.

Two weeks go by: no points. I call Hyatt Globalist and ask if there’s any requests or actions on my account that maybe I’m not seeing. They say no and ask what happened. I relay the entire story. They put me on hold and, when it’s done, provide the points the Hyatt Place Washington DC/US Capitol manager promised and then forgot about ten minutes after I left his hotel.

But let me say something good: again, the night security guard was compassionate and has the CSR skills that even a manager there doesn’t. And also the hotel is well located. But otherwise, avoid it. A hotel isn’t just about doing all the big things right – which Hyatt usually does – but about caring enough to notice the little things and take ownership of them. Which THIS specific Hyatt does not.

On the way out I saw a handmade Do Not Disturb on a doorknob, because, as the occupant wrote, “the other one seems to be gone.” The fact that someone has to take the time to make one of these in a hotel charging 400 DOLLARS a night, means you should probably stay elsewhere.

Conclusion

I am starting to feel that the “Hyatt Touch” that the chain has had due to its smaller size and previously tighter brand standards is beginning to crumble down.

Some of these properties, especially select service, are not adequately maintained and are staffed with personnel not fit to work in the hospitality sector, and here we are.

I understand where the reader is coming from. It is of utmost importance to me that there are no noises when I sleep, especially from the AC.

If I am in a suite, I tend to turn the AC off in the bedroom but leave it on in the living room and keep the door between the two open. This tends to ensure that the noise level is at an acceptable level.

I also loathe when hotel management promises to do something, and then they don’t, like the reader’s case. However, I am glad they could resolve it with the help of the Globalist helpline.

Nicely appointed suite and property in general, considering it is a select service hotel. Also very inexpensive for Kyoto. For next month, rooms at this property start at about $90++ or 12,000 points per night

Hyatt’s Announcement:

CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) and Mr & Mrs Smith today announced an agreement for a Hyatt affiliate to acquire London-based Mr & Mrs Smith, a platform offering direct booking access to a carefully curated and growing collection of over 1,500 boutique and luxury properties in some of the world’s most desirable locations. Hyatt will acquire 100 percent of the asset-light Mr & Mrs Smith platform for an enterprise value of £53.0 million in cash consideration.

“We are excited by this planned acquisition and to explore bringing guests and World of Hyatt members even more global luxury offerings across hundreds of geographies – including over 20 countries where there are currently no Hyatt hotels such as Fiji, Croatia, Iceland and Anguilla,” said Mark Vondrasek, chief commercial officer, Hyatt. “Founders Tamara and James Lohan alongside their impressive team have built the ultimate global direct booking collection of truly unique stay experiences including rooms located in treehouses, within caves, and underwater suites. Importantly, we see a lot of synergy between our collective ethos of care, and we look forward to working together to bring our shared focus to new, memorable stay experiences for guests and World of Hyatt members – and introduce new guests to Hyatt hotels around the world.”

The planned acquisition of Mr & Mrs Smith is expected to build on Hyatt’s leadership position in luxury and further strengthen Hyatt’s distribution capabilities, especially across Europe – through forging relationships with additional hotel owners and more than 1 million loyal Mr & Mrs Smith members. This acquisition builds on a transformative growth period for Hyatt in the last 12 months, which included the recently completed acquisition of Dream Hotel Group’s lifestyle brand and management portfolio and the conversion of a portfolio of over 30 franchise agreements with Lindner Hotels & Resorts and me and all hotels, as well as substantial organic growth of Hyatt’s global portfolio. As a result of Hyatt’s expanded brand portfolio and ever-growing offering for every stay occasion, membership in the World of Hyatt loyalty program has more than tripled during the past five years.

The transaction is anticipated to close in the second quarter of this year, subject to customary closing conditions. At a later date following the closing, Hyatt plans to unveil direct booking access to properties within the Mr & Mrs Smith platform through Hyatt’s distribution channels, including Hyatt.com and the World of Hyatt app. The anticipated move will have the potential to unlock access to more than twice the number of global boutique and luxury properties within Hyatt direct booking channels, and Hyatt is exploring ways to enable World of Hyatt members to earn and redeem points across eligible hotels in the Mr & Mrs Smith collection. World of Hyatt members are some of the most valuable travelers in the industry who spend more and stay more, generating high-quality revenue for hotel owners.

“I am really excited that we have found such a dynamic and globally trusted brand as Hyatt to take Mr & Mrs Smith into our next chapter. We have long admired and respected Hyatt and are confident that there is no one better placed to build on what we have achieved and take our company to new heights,” shared Tamara Lohan, co-founder and chief executive officer, Mr & Mrs Smith. “Our vision has always been for Mr & Mrs Smith to be the world’s definitive travel club for hotel lovers. Thanks to Hyatt, that vision has become much closer to reality. With Hyatt’s support, Mr & Mrs Smith will be able to offer our community of members, hoteliers and partners so much more.”

Following the planned acquisition close, over 100 Mr & Mrs Smith colleagues are expected to join Hyatt’s Commercial Services team, including Tamara Lohan who will serve as Mr & Mrs Smith CEO, reporting to Mark Vondrasek, Hyatt’s chief commercial officer, and James Lohan who will serve as Mr & Mrs Smith chief creative officer.

In connection with the transaction, Credit Suisse served as financial advisor to Hyatt and Linklaters LLP acted as its legal advisor. Arrowpoint Advisory (part of Rothschild & Co) served as financial advisor to Mr & Mrs Smith and Fieldfisher LLP acted as its legal advisor.

Mr & Mrs Smith Club:

Conclusion

The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter. So it will likely be 2024 before we see any of these hotels on Hyatt’s platform and their World of Hyatt participation.

Mr & Mrs Smith currently has an agreement with IHG, and I expect this to end once the deal with Hyatt has closed.

You have to remember that Mr & Mrs Smith is not really a chain but a booking platform like Tablet Hotels, Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and the likes, and hotels are of variable quality.

The press release states that Hyatt is exploring ways for World of Hyatt members to earn and redeem points at Mr & Mrs Smith hotels. However, Mr & Mrs Smith Club likely stays, and not all hotels will become World of Hyatt participating. Elite benefits at these hotels are probably limited.

Also, it seems that the Mr & Mrs Smith booking platform will stay, and you can merely also book these hotels through Hyatt, precisely like what is the situation with select Design Hotels and Marriott. Only some of the Design Hotels are Marriott Bonvoy participating, and the benefits are very limited.

This must mean that Hyatt’s deal with the Small Luxury Hotels of the World will end. So why would they have hotels from two competing platforms?

The hotel should reopen in the 2nd quarter of 2025.

The hotel was probably the best city hotel when it opened in 1994 and was featured in the 2003 movie Lost In Translation. The hotel was supposed to close after the 2020 Olympics in early 2021, but these plans were pushed out by three years to 2024.

Park Hyatt Tokyo Announcement:

Park Hyatt Tokyo Announces Hotel Upgrades to Begin in 2024

April 26, 2023

Park Hyatt Tokyo announces plans for a property-wide renewal of its guestrooms and facilities starting in spring 2024. The hotel will suspend operations from May 7, 2024 and is slated to reopen in the 2nd quarter of 2025. The planned enhancements coincide with the hotel’s 30th anniversary, ushering in a new chapter for the hotel, aimed at elevating the guest experience and revitalizing its iconic ambiance. Locals and worldly travelers alike have cherished the hotel as a sophisticated home-away-from-home since its opening in 1994, and the forthcoming updates will bring a fresh, modern feel to the already-renowned property.

To continue meeting the needs of today’s discerning travelers while preserving the hotel’s distinct and timeless design concept, acclaimed design agency Jouin Manku has been chosen to lead the transformation respecting the beloved design philosophy of the hotel’s notable original interior designer, John Morford.

In a joint statement, Mr. Patrick Jouin and Mr. Sanjit Manku, co-founders and CEOs of Jouin Manku share, “We are sincerely grateful that our studio has been given the rare opportunity to renovate Park Hyatt Tokyo and set the stage for this prestigious hotel’s much-anticipated future. We are excited to work with the hotel team to create a uniquely elegant design experience for guests, all in keeping with John Morford’s original vision. We thank the Park Hyatt Tokyo team for the trust they have placed in us.”

“As Park Hyatt Tokyo approaches its 30th anniversary next year, we are delighted to work with the wonderful team at Jouin Manku and our hotel’s associates to make this renewal a success,” said Fredrik Harfors, general manager of Park Hyatt Tokyo. “We are grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding as we embark on a journey to enhance the guest experience at our hotel. Drawing inspiration from the trailblazing legacy of Park Hyatt Tokyo, we are committed to creating an elevated atmosphere that will continue to shine as a beacon of understated luxury for decades to come.”

More information about the planned upgrades and construction schedule will be announced closer to the project’s start date.

About Jouin Manku

A singular multicultural and ambitious duo of designer and architect, Patrick Jouin and Sanjit Manku, have invented a trade at the crossroads of industrial production and the long tradition of craftsmanship. Along with architect Jacques Goubin and a team of 50 architects, interior architects, and designers, they conceive and orchestrate every element of the projects they create, erasing the lines between architecture, interior space, and objects. Associated with the greatest for exceptional projects, such as Alain Ducasse, Pierre Hermé, and Van Cleef & Arpels, the studio develops a creative dialectic dedicated to space planning and architectural design projects.

Conclusion

My first stay at the Park Hyatt Tokyo was probably in 2004/2005, and it was a pretty remarkable experience back then and still is service-wise. I was there most recently in late March.

As the press release puts it, the design is indeed timeless, but the rooms and suites need a throughout refreshment.

But the service still is top-notch. I made a last-minute reservation in 2022 and pulled up at the hotel 30 minutes later, and a bellman greeted me by my name, looking surprised to see me.

The rates at the hotel this year have been REALLY high, and it probably would have made sense to close the hotel during the pandemic and follow the original refurbishment timeline.

I cannot wait to return in 2025 when it has been refurbished, but I will be back at least a couple of times before the closure.

I just reached my 40th night and I decided to go for the $100 gift card again as it’s the most logical and valuable choice given that I’m currently in North America to use it, but what about the other options!?

When Hyatt revamped their loyalty program into World of Hyatt they also introduced Milestone Awards, which reward members on their way up the status ladder throughout the membership year. I found this new system to be very profitable, especially the free night awards in between.

You can access World of Hyatt Benefits and Milestones schedule here.

The 40 nights threshold is one of the few where you can actually choose which award you’d like to have deposited into the account. The next choices can be made for 70/80/90/100 nights with the selection being either a suite upgrade or 10,000 points (I’d always choose the points).

The email that’s being sent to members offers the same choices as listed and the award will be distributed instantly.

I consider only option one (Gift Card) and two (points) as worthwhile alternatives here and decided to choose the US$100 gift card. The issue here is to determine which selection provides the best value.

If you don’t want to lose much time over it then either way it’s pretty much a wash as it’s almost always possible to find a 2 cent per point redemption value when redeeming Hyatt points in a sensible manner. It’s also a very universal currency that can be used worldwide while the gift card has strict geographical limitations on it (available to use in the Americas only):

Hyatt eGift Cards are issued by Hyatt Fulfilment of Maryland, Inc. and can be redeemed at participating Hyatt hotels and resorts in the Americas

Hyatt Gift Card (valid at participating Hyatt hotels in the Americas, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean)

If this limitation creates a problem for you then the choice is clear to pick the points as your award choice.

In my case, I choose the $100 gift card as I’m staying to the U.S. next month where I have the option of redeeming the $100 for pretty much 2/3 of a free night at one of my usual hotels where I like to stay. Those would cost me at least 12,000 in points per night, so I feel like the gift card gives me the best value here especially since I’m earning additional points for the entire revenue of this stay.

There was a slight change this year as far as option three is concerned. Previously Hyatt offered a 10,000 points discount for booking an experience package. Now it’s a $150 credit. I’ve never used one and likely never will but that’s something to keep in mind if it interests you.

Conclusion

It’s a nice extra to be able to pick pretty much a free night at a medium-range property just for hitting 40 nights with WOH, especially as with 30 I already received a free night at a Cat 4 property. The next free night Cat 1-7 would be at 60 nights when re-qualifying for Globalist, but since that’s not necessarily required this year (BILT Rewards Challenge) I adjusted my stay pattern for now. I might still end up with 60+ nights this year but the 40 night threshold was easy.

As far as the gift card is concerned, there are a few properties at the 5,000 and 8,000 points level where it’ll be easy to exceed the $100 value by selecting the points. For myself, I’ll just make the giftcard work as outlined above.

What would you pick?

Hyatt’s Announcement:

Hyatt’s Transformative Growth Continues with Announcement of Hyatt Studios, Hyatt’s First Upper-Midscale Brand in the Americas

The Hyatt Studios brand is an extended-stay brand created with the needs of both hotel developers and World of Hyatt loyalty members in mind; announcement supported by signed letters of interest for more than 100 Hyatt Studios hotels

CHICAGO (April 18, 2023) – Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) today announces plans for Hyatt Studios, the newest addition to Hyatt’s portfolio of brands. The brand, which marks Hyatt’s entry into upper-midscale lodging in the Americas, was conceived through direct collaboration with hotel developers and listening closely to the needs of target guests. The announcement is supported by signed letters of interest in development agreements from multiple developers for more than 100 Hyatt Studios hotels, with construction expected to begin in 2023 and the first hotel expected to open in 2024.

The immediate interest from the development community in the Hyatt Studios brand is a testament to Hyatt taking a developer-informed approach to creating this brand, prioritizing scalable construction options and an efficient operating model designed to adapt to local market needs across primary, secondary and tertiary markets alike. The brand is designed to be flexible based on developer needs, accommodating both extended-stay and shorter length-of-stay leisure and business transient guests depending on the hotel’s market and guest base.

“We are proud to launch the Hyatt Studios brand and bring the high-quality experience and level of care promised by the Hyatt brand to smaller markets and submarkets where we don’t have Hyatt hotels,” said Jim Chu, chief growth officer, Hyatt. “We identified a white space for Hyatt, creating a compelling opportunity to significantly accelerate our industry-leading net rooms growth, care for World of Hyatt members on more stay occasions and introduce World of Hyatt to new guests in a new segment which we expect will drive increased direct bookings for all properties across the Hyatt portfolio.”

The Hyatt Studios brand will join the Hyatt Place, Hyatt House and Caption by Hyatt brands in the select service category, offering Hyatt’s signature guest experience with self-serve amenities and in-room offerings. Extended-stay guests can expect everything they need to feel comfortable and live their full lives when away from home, while enjoying the consistent Hyatt quality they expect.

Guestrooms will marry form with function and offer suites with kitchen amenities to provide comfort during extended trips away from home. The Hyatt Studios food and beverage experience will include a complimentary grab-and-go breakfast and a best-in-class, 24-hour market with a wide variety of options to satisfy extended-stay guests – from health-conscious snacks and ready-made meals to sweet and savory staples to fulfill travel cravings, all of which can be prepared and enjoyed in the guestroom’s kitchen featuring a multi-function convection microwave.

“As with all brands in the Hyatt portfolio, Hyatt Studios hotels will appeal to the high-end guest within its segment,” said Amy Weinberg, senior vice president, brand, loyalty & data. “Amidst a sea of interchangeable extended-stay competitors, Hyatt Studios hotels will transcend dated notions of value-driven compromise by inviting guests to enjoy both the coziness of a studio apartment and the positive energy of being in a creative studio, all with the quality and contemporary style that is characteristic of Hyatt.”

Hyatt Studios will be led by industry veteran Dan Hansen, who has served as strategic advisor throughout the brand’s conception.

Conclusion

This appears to be a paired-down version of Hyatt Place and competes with other established upper-midscale extended stay brands such as Hilton’s Home2 Suites & Homewood Suites, Choice’s Comfort Suites, and Marriott’s TownPlace Suites.

Hyatt has traditionally concentrated on the luxury segment and was late to the select service with its conversion of Summerfield and AmeriSuites to Hyatt House and Hyatt Place brands.

It is always exciting for a hotelier to launch a new brand, but I believe they would be better served by ensuring the consistency of their existing ones, and Hyatt already has 26.

When was the last time something genuinely new and innovative was launched in the hospitality sector?

I cannot think of anything other than Starwood’s W brand that came to life in the late 1990s. Most current brand launches by large corporations are copycat iterations of existing products in the market with slight modifications.

Reader Question:

I stayed two nights at a Hyatt Regency hotel and they waived my first night fee as a compensation and only posted 1 night for my stay.

Is that a norm? Or I should ask them to post back the missing night?

This is often the issue if a hotel comps a night by reducing the price of it to zero, and not just with Hyatt.

Here’s what you should do to get the correct night credit:

1. 1-Night Stays

If the stay is entirely comped, ask the number of points deposited to your account that a free night at the property would require.

2. Multiple Night Stays

Two options:

a) Point deposit for 1 night (like on the 1-night stays)

or

b) prorated refund of the night by reducing the price of all nights of the stay.

Conclusion

We probably should run an updated piece on how to deal with on-property compensation negotiations when things are not as expected, or they go south.

The hotels prefer to discount the night or comp it, which is rarely the best option for the guest (elite night credit and points, and any bonus offers won’t post).

It’s Back: Buy World Of Hyatt Points With 25% Discount Through June 2, 2023 https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/04/15/its-back-buy-world-of-hyatt-points-with-25-discount-through-june-2-2023/?omhide=true https://loyaltylobby.com/2023/04/15/its-back-buy-world-of-hyatt-points-with-25-discount-through-june-2-2023/#disqus_thread Sat, 15 Apr 2023 04:39:09 +0000 https://loyaltylobby.com/?p=171677 World of Hyatt previously launched a promotion to buy points with a 25% discount which started yesterday and will run through June 2, 2023. Members can buy up to 55,000 points every calendar year before any possible bonuses, and Hyatt has several opportunities for buying points throughout the year.

Hyatt usually alternates between either a discount or a bonus for purchasing points and also lifts the 55k annual limit a few times per year (not this time, though).

The last sale, which ended three weeks ago, had a 25% bonus, this time they offer a 25% discount and much too my own dismay, the sale started a day too late as I just bought 16k points the day before.

You can access this offer and check your bonus or discount on Hyatt’s website here.

Here is the pricing when purchasing the 10,000 points (min 5000 points purchase required to profit from the discount):

I cleared out my Hyatt account last week to make some reservations for hotels that are quite pricey and even found it worthwhile to buy 16k points at the regular price (could have saved $100 under this promo a day later).

World of Hyatt points sales usually offer a maximum of 40% bonus or 30% discount during regular sales; this current one would also sit comfortably in that zone.

The cost of a World of Hyatt point purchased under this offer at the 25% discount is 1.8 cents each. During the previous sales, the price of a point was as low as 1.68 cents.

Does it make sense to purchase points at this price?

It only makes sense if you use them at costly Hyatt properties such as the Park Hyatt Maldives, Kyoto, or Tokyo. However, sometimes the lower category properties can often make sense when the paid rates are high. Otherwise, buying at such a high price makes only limited sense.

Award rooms with Hyatt are available as long as standard rooms are available for sale. This means that points are usually a good value if something is happening in the city, pushing the paid rates through the roof.

It’s worthwhile to check what the current points rates are if you have a particular stay in mind. With Hyatt now having introduced Peak/Off-Peak awards, there is no longer a firm amount of points, and this can make or break the case if it’s worthwhile to redeem, let alone buy points.

Conclusion

Hyatt has brought back a new campaign for members to buy points, this time with a discount of 25%. The price, including the bonus, might still make sense for some, but generally speaking, I’d hold off until a slightly better offer comes around unless you have an urgent need to book something like I did last week.

Hyatt sells its points at a bonus or discount continuously throughout the year. So if you don’t need World of Hyatt points right now, you can buy them later. The new calendar year has just begun (second quarter now), so if you make such a purchase right now, it will count toward the entire 2023 allowance to purchase, which is yet another reason to wait for the best offer that suits your needs.

These are the terms & conditions for this campaign:

Offer available with purchases made between 12:00 am ET April 14, 2023 and ends 11:59 pm ET June 2, 2023. Purchase 5,000 or more Bonus Points in a single transaction and get 25% discount. Bonus Points will be awarded upon completion of an individual transaction. In order to participate in a purchase transaction, you must be a member for at least 60 days to purchase or receive Bonus Points. Bonus Points can be purchased in increments of 1,000, up to 55,000 points per calendar year. Members can receive points in increments of 1,000, up to 55,000 points per calendar year. This exclusive member offer is non-transferable. Additional Bonus Points awarded under this offer do not count towards these maximums. Offer may be withdrawn or changed without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer. Only purchases made online are eligible for the promotion.

Price includes all applicable fees. GST/HST will be charged to Canadian residents. QST will be charged to Quebec residents. This transaction is completed by Points.com Inc. Purchased points are not refundable and transactions are non-reversible. Purchased points are applicable toward all World of Hyatt awards. Points purchased using this option will post within 48 hours. Purchased points do not count toward World of Hyatt elite membership tiers.
