I was looking for Bangkok availability in mid-June and came across this hotel, where I have stayed numerous times. So I would assume that the reopening is on June 1 because it is only two weeks from now.

The renovations don’t appear to have been completed, OR they haven’t loaded availability for any of the suites that the hotel has,

I hope they have done a complete renovation because last time, they hardly touched the bathroom at all, and it was in a different style than the suite or room (you could clearly see the difference).

There is another InterContinental opening in Bangkok, but it has been now delayed until March 2024.

The availability of this rate plan is good, and I like that it is not prepaid and that there are no fees to cancel if done a minimum of three days before the intended check-in.

The opening of this hotel has been a mini fiasco. Many had their reservations for stays before May just canceled, and there was no help from IHG to relocate affected guests at the booked rates at the Six Senses (the only other comparable IHG hotel in the city).

I am eager to check this hotel out in two weeks, although I always advise my friends not to stay at new hotels within 6 to 12 months of their opening.

Recently I have stayed in Crowne Plaza Bangkok Lumpini Park. I have done booking using my reward points.

One day prior to my stay, I got mail stating that room is upgraded as a Diamond Elite benefit.

I have viewed my reservation – and it shows “1 King Bed Premium NS Lounge Access”.

I was happy.

When I did check-in, hotel told me that this is only room type and not actual Lounge access entitled.

I have checked for reservation for some random dates and showed them that there is another room type which says only Premium room and No lounge access mentioned.

Still they have not agreed for that and no lounge access was given.

What could I have done at that time? Is the hotel in right side and am I on wrong side of argument.

If I am right, can I raise this to IHG support?

This question comes frequently, not only for stays at IHG-affiliated hotels.

You get a prearrival room or suite upgrade to an accommodation with club lounge access, but access is denied.

There is often zero difference between standard and club rooms beyond perhaps a higher floor and club access.

It is probably easier for a hotel employee to upgrade to a club room due to inventory issues than to a similar room without access.

The issue is that IHG has detached the lounge access from the status itself, and you can choose it as your Milestone Reward at 40 or 70 nights. You don’t need to be a Diamond to access it, but a lounge access pass is enough.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, I don’t think that there is much that the reader can do with the IHG customer support.

I spent a couple of weeks at this hotel when it was on the PointBreaks (5,000 points per night), and at that point, pun intended, they were giving the lounge access to Priority Club/IHG Rewards Club top-tier members, but soon after they weren’t (pay for play only).

I had this same issue years ago at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Singapore, where my club room came without access, resulting in a lovely suite upgrade on my next stay.

You can double, triple, or quadruple the recently-earned points, but obviously for a price. This is a targeted offer valid through July 31, 2023.

Last year I opted for a significant number of F&B Milestone rewards.

I have only travelled within Europe over the last 18 months.

Although the expiry date has been extended to December 2023 I can get no information about when I will be able to redeem these in the UK and Europe.

Numerous telephone calls to the Service Centre have proved to be unhelpful and frustrating.

Do you have any up to date information available about redeeming F&B Milestone Rewards to share with your readers.

The concise answer to the reader’s question is no. There is no communication from IHG when these are enabled at all IHG hotels worldwide.

IHG’s loyalty program went through a refresh a year ago and has a new Milestone Rewards feature that allows members to choose their preferred reward every 10 nights consumed, starting at 20 nights and ending at 100 nights.

There are always other options, but theoretically, the F&B option is roughly double the points option’s value.

But what are these F&B awards really worth if you cannot use them? I have 12 of them sitting on my account.

The IHG’s website states that these are available for use at “SELECT HOTELS,” but there is no list of hotels where we can use them.

IHG states they are usable at select brands in North America and Greater China but nothing else. I am staying at one of the IHG’s flagship InterContinental hotels in Europe, and the F&B awards are not enabled here.

The drop-down menu on the F&B awards indicates that a stay at the Indigo Hotel in Helsinki would have been an eligible place to use these.

The refresh of IHG One Rewards hasn’t exactly gone to the plan regarding these Food and Beverage awards and confirmable suite upgrades (but would we have expected anything else from the IHG?).

It is probably best to avoid these F&B awards until they can be used at all IHG-affiliated hotels worldwide and choose the bonus points instead (at least we can use them).

I am almost sure that IHG will extend all 2023 expiry ones by additional 12 months due to the inability to use them in most markets.

Again, communication from IHG has been non-existent. It is almost like Atlanta pretends that all is fine, like Baghdad Bob did in the 1990s.

Now, IHG has sent out an email to affected IHG One Rewards members and offers them status soft landing and bonus points.

Status:

Member will keep their current status through the end of 2023. Standard cardholders will receive Silver and Premier cardholders Platinum for 2024 unless they reach a higher tier in 2023.

Bonus Points:

Standard cardholders receive 2 additional points per USD, and premium cardholders 4 extra points per USD for stays from June 28, 2023 (promo registration required).

Conclusion

This is an olive branch from IHG to cobranded cardholders in the UK that are about to lose access to the product (new account issuance was stopped a while back).

The email talks about 2X and 4X points which is misleading because you won’t get double or quadruple points but rather a 20% or 40% base points bonus, depending on the card type you have.

The hotel opening was significantly delayed, and it was pushed out several times this year, usually by a month. The most recent opening date on IHG’s website was May 2, even when reservations were no longer available until June 1.

Conclusion

There is likely a delay in readying the hotel, and they are running late but have decided to open it for existing reservations but not allow new ones.

Communication from the hotel and IHG has been awful throughout the spring. Some have had their reservations canceled and told to reaccomondate themselves.

It is not uncommon for new hotel openings to be delayed, but this behavior doesn’t build any trust from loyalty program members to book them before they are open and ready for business.

InterContinental Classic rooms tend to be very correct pretty much everywhere and this is not the exception. Size and décor are up to brand standards and meet all expectations for a base room at a luxury property. For next month, these classic rooms are selling from SGD 460 ($350) all in, or 51,000 points!
